Im Gegensatz zu vielen anderen Geräten ist es beim Galaxy Nexus (wie bei jedem Nexus-Phone) relativ einfach, den Bootloader zu entsperren, Root zu erlangen, die ClockworkMod-Recovery zu flashen und dann mit Custom ROMs, Kerneln, Radios etc. zu experimentieren. Für "alte Hasen" sind die benötigten Schritte sicherlich fast im Schlaf zu erledigen; für manch einen User ist das GNx aber das erste Gerät, das ihnen nicht mit signierten Bootloadern u.ä. Steine in den Weg legt - und deshalb auch wenig Erfahrungen mit der Thematik hat.

Für diese "Klientel" hat mskip, seines Zeichens Senior Moderator bei den xda-devs, DAS universelle Hacking-Tool für das Galaxy Nexus entwickelt: Das GNex TOOLKIT ermöglicht (großenteils mit einem einzigen Klick):

• Bootloader entsperren / sperren
• Root für alle ICS-Versionen
• Flashen der ClockworkMod Recovery / Restaurieren der Stock-Recovery
• Umbenennen des "Recovery Restore File" (wird nur benötigt, wenn man die CWMR auf einem Stock-ROM behalten will)
• 1-CLICK für alle (!) vorgenannten Schritte

• Flashen des originalen Google Stock ROMs
• Booten in die ClockworkMod Recovery, ohne diese permanent zu installieren
• Booten/Flashen von .img Dateien (im Fastboot Modus)
• Daten vom PC auf das GNx kopieren und umgekehrt (im ADB Modus)
• File Permissions setzen (im ADB-Modus)
• Viele Reboot-Funktionen (sowohl im Fastboot- wie auch ADB Modus)

Benötigt werden:
• Fastboot-Treiber (installierbar über das Toolkit)
(Falls das nicht funktioniert: PdaNet installieren - bei der Installation Samsung wählen; anschließend kann PdaNet wieder deinstalliert werden).
• Alternativ gibt es hier Universal-Treiber.
• Bei Problemen mit der Treiber-Installation hilft dieser Thread; bei manchen Windows-7-Installationen muß Win7 daran gehindert werden, den richtigen Treiber wieder zu überschreiben...
• Das GNex Toolkit V6.2

Nach der Installation der Treiber:
• USB-Kabel vom GNx abziehen und Gerät ausschalten.
• Beide Lautstärke-Tasten gedrückt halten, dann Power-Taste drücken und festhalten, bis das GNx im Fastboot Modus ist (erkennbar an einem auf dem Rücken liegen grünen Android-Robot mit geöffneter "Bauchklappe").
• Den Windows-Gerätemanager öffnen zur Kontrolle, ob der Fastboot-Treiber korrekt installiert ist (oder ggf. manuell installiert werden muß).
• Das GNx wieder per USB-Kabel mit dem PC verbinden; im Gerätemanager muß nun eine neuer Eintrag "Android Phone" (ohne Ausrufezeichen) erscheinen - dann ist der Treiber korrekt installiert.

Das Toolkit benutzen:
• Die exe-Datei des Toolkit herunterladen und ausführen; das selbstentpackende Archiv wird in C:\Galaxy Nexus ToolKit entpackt.
• Das GNx nun wieder in den Fastboot Modus (siehe oben) bringen, dann per USB-Kabel am PC anschließen.
• In dem neu angelegten Ordner die Toolkit.exe starten.
Hinweis: Seit der Version 3.0 kann das GNx auch unter laufendem OS per USB angeschlossen werden, da man im Hauptmenü des Tools auch in den Fastboot Modus booten kann!
• Beim 1. Screen wird nach der Build-Nummer (4.0.1, 4.0.2, 4.0.3, 4.0.4) und nach dem Modell (GSM oder LTE) gefragt.
• Im nun folgenden Hauptmenü des Tools wird links oben die Seriennummer des Galaxy Nexus angezeigt (sofern der Treiber korrekt installiert wurde), ebenso der Modus (Fastboot oder ADB).
• Nun können die (mit ausführlichen Informationen hinterlegten) Optionen ausgewählt werden!
